- Autographs
Consignment of approximately 70 old
historical documents which include military documents,
governmental and military appointments, letters, plat maps etc.
from the Belknap/Fowler family. The oldest papers date
from about 1792 up through the Civil War to the Spanish American
War all the way to about 1910. This group of documents is
from one family beginning with the Abel Belknap family in the
late 1700's through his son Chauncey/Chancey Belknap and
Chauncey's daughter Jane Ann Belknap who married David Edward
Fowler and their son Edward Sydney Fowler. These various
documents have been signed by noted people in history from some
of the early Governors of the State of New York, several of whom
became Vice Presidents of the United States, there are some
Military Generals like William T. Sherman, O.O. Howard,
W.S. Rosencrans and George Thomas as
well as Presidents of the United States which include
Abraham Lincoln, two Andrew Johnson, two Chester A.
Arthur, Rutherford B. Hayes, Grover Cleveland, William McKinnley,
four Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard
Taft. Some of these documents have been signed by
some of the various president's cabinet members. These
documents are a chronological record of the Belknap and Fowler
family. The condition of these documents ranges from
poor to very good and possibly in some cases exceptional given
their age. I feel they are highly desirable. They
have been kept rolled up inside metal canisters for many years.
These documents have some folds and creases and some fraying
around the edges of some, but all in all are in great condition.
Most are in very clear and legible condition. The
McKinnley document has a large tear. These documents are a
magnificent piece of history. This family has had a long
and illustrious history. Abel Belknap served in the
Revolution as is indicated when his great grand son Edward
Sydney Fowler joined the Sons of The American Revolution in the
late 1800's. Some genealogical history of both the Belknap
and Fowler family is available. This family came from
Newburgh, Orange Co. New York. They were a family of well
connected lawyers and judges. They settled in Newburgh,
which was originally in Ulster Co. New York. There are
several newspaper accounts which can be found online which
coincide with many of the appointments of Edward Sydney Fowler
from the mid to late 1800's through the early 1900's. E.S.
Fowler was himself a lawyer and Collector of the Port of New
York. He served in the military as had his father David
Fowler who served in the Civil War. Edward also served in
the Treasury Department. He was at sixteen the youngest
clerk appointed in the War Department at Washington by Samuel
Thomas for General O.O. Howard in 1866. His father was
Lieutenant Colonel David Edward Fowler who was appointed by
Abraham Lincoln Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers with the
rank of Captain. We do not want to separate this
collection. We are only interested in selling this
collection all together...If you are interested in this group of
documents please e-mail Linda Cooper at
jacksoncorner@sbcglobal.net Upon request, I will
send you a complete list of the documents... Price
